He had carefully engineered his entrance: when his car pulled up, the Disney characters mobbed it, and soon afterward clouds of balloons were released into the air. Disney was by then immensely famous, appearing on his own television show every Sunday night. Then Walt Disney himself arrived, stepping out of a stretch limousine and gallantly reaching a hand into the car to help his wife, Lillian, onto the pavement. The arrival of the movie’s principals aroused muted excitement: Julie Andrews, who played Mary Poppins, had never appeared in a movie before, and Dick Van Dyke-the chimney sweep Bert-became much better known after the film’s release. Hollywood luminaries arrived in chauffeured automobiles, the women in ball gowns and mink stoles (Angie Dickinson, Maureen O’Hara, Suzanne Pleshette), the men wearing dinner jackets (Edward G. Throngs of screaming fans were greeted by Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Snow White and the dwarfs, as well as by entertainers who gestured toward the movie’s Edwardian setting: a twelve-piece pearly band, chimney-sweep dancers, valets dressed as bobbies, and a bevy of pretty Disneyland hostesses, whose traditional uniforms (kilts and black velvet riding helmets) suggested a general Englishness. All the nasty, nannies blew away! Huge gusts of wind swept them all off their feet. The 1964 world première of “Mary Poppins” was held at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, and it was the kind of spectacle for which the Disney organization had become famous. Well, Jane, they were! Then something rather peculiar happened. I thought it was jolly good! Several nannies arrived to apply for the position, but none of them met the description we’d requested. ”, A must! I don’t know why father didn’t like our advertisement. Michael: “Wanted: a nanny for two adorable children.” “Play games, sing songs, bring treats. Someplace different, where you’ve never been before! Well, of course, it ain’t for me to say, but what she’s probably got in mind is a jolly holiday somewhere. Quick as you can say, “strike me pink” the most unusual things begin to happen. Other Nannies take children to the park, but when you’re with Mary Poppins, suddenly you’re in places you’ve never dreamed of. Where did you say she was taking you? To the park? Hmm? Not if I know Mary Poppins. Mary Poppins! And you two, I’ve seen you about chasing a kite last time, I believe. As for the two of you, to the nursery this instant!īert: Wait! Stop! Don’t move a muscle. Now if you’ll go into the kitchen I’m sure Cook will find you a nice plate of something. I’m very grateful to you for returning our children, Constable. Now, Winifred, please don’t be emotional. A policeman’s here? Well, what wonderful service. I should like to see a policeman around immediately. This is George Banks at number 17 Cherry Tree Lane. Give me the police station, quickly, please. Banks: Winefred, where are the children? What do you mean you don’t know? You say you’ve looked everywhere for them? Very well, I shall deal with this at once. Father found our suggestions to be bothersome and he told us he had “enough of this nonsense!” All we requested was that the applicant be kind, witty, attractive, play games & give us treats. He replied that it was “most interesting” and then sent us off to the nursery. Father didn’t approve of our advertisement. After all, it was “our” nanny that they were seeking to hire. Jane: When we heard that father was going to search for a new Nanny after Katie Nana left us, we wanted to have some say in the matter. Unless, of course, you hire the next Nanny. When I chose Katie Nana I thought that she would be firm with the children. Banks: George, I’m glad you’re home! There’s something I’d like to discuss with you. I should know by then! I'll see the children now. The best people also give every second Wednesday off from six 'til late and that is what I will take. You'd like to see my references? Well, I make it a point never to bring references. "Take us on outings, give us treats," "Rosy cheeks and fairly pretty." There's no objection on that score, I hope. "Play games all sorts." Which I most certainly can. George and Winefred Banks lives here, do they not? And are you looking for a nanny? Very well, then. I've come in answer to the advertisement.
